PROJECT: MOTION MODERN DANCE COLLECTIVE Vision: Project: Motion Modern Dance Collective is a non-profit dance company based in Memphis, Tennessee comprised of dance artists with diverse movement backgrounds. Since it’s inception in 1987, the artistic vision of Project: Motion has been to transform ideas (thoughts, feelings, actions) into movement-based art that engages its audiences emotionally, intellectually and communicates expressively. The dance collective strives to transport its audiences and participating artists into a unique kinetic world that explores the human condition through movement, imagery and the magic of theatre. As a creator and presenter of innovative dance in Memphis, the company continues to cultivate artistic collaborations that stretch aesthetic boundaries, support a nurturing environment for experimentation and expansion on the creative process, and provide on-going artistic opportunities that enhance the creative potential, vision and skills of its members. It is their belief that the power of dance can spark the imagination all the while offering more powerful possibilities for expression, questioning, reasoning and debate. After two decades of being an active and progressive arts organization in west Tennessee, Project: Motion continues to be an increasingly important catalyst for creative exchange in the contemporary dance/theatre community of Memphis. At present, the company operates as a group collective harboring a wealth of artistic talents melding dynamic concepts into fresh, unpredictable and sophisticated works. Mission Statement Project: Motion is a contemporary dance collective devoted to the creation and presentation of innovative, well-crafted dance works that inspire, stimulate and engage audiences on an intellectual, emotional and physical level. Project: Motion fosters artistic collaborations and provides a forum for local dance artists to experiment, develop skills and hone artistic vision in a nurturing and challenging environment. The company functions as a catalyst for creative exchange, innovation and expression, while developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for contemporary modern dance in the community. WHERE WE GROW: THEATREWORKS & THE EVERGREEN THEATRE Since 1995, Project: Motion has been in residence at THEATREWORKS, an intimate, professional performance venue located in the heart of midtown Memphis. THEATREWORKS is home to six diverse resident theatre and dance companies that share low-cost rehearsal, performance and office space. The theater also hosts a variety of community classes, guest organizations, emerging performers and teaching artists from around the city, as well as regional and international touring groups. In February 2010, the THEATREWORKS organization physically expanded its artistic boundaries by acquiring a new performance facility, The EVERGREEN THEATRE located at 1705 Poplar Avenue. The newly acquired theater was added in order to fill the city’s need for additional performance and rehearsal space for a growing community of emerging arts groups. Project: Motion continues to teach weekly community modern dance classes at THEATREWORKS (2085 Monroe Ave.), but all dance performances will take place at The EVERGREEN THEATRE.
